Taylor Swift Repurchases All of Her Music

Taylor Swift now controls the rights to her entire music catalog after purchasing the master recordings of her first six albums. The purchase also includes her videos, unreleased music and artwork.

Six years ago, Swift lost the rights to her music after it was purchased by music executive Scooter Braun of Ithaca Holdings. After that purchase, the rights were then sold to an investment firm entitled Shamrock Capital.
In an attempt to regain control of her music, Swift previously re-recorded four of her albums and released the titles under the moniker Taylor’s Version. Her version of Fearless was released in 2021, followed by Red, Speak Now and 1989 in 2023.

In a letter on her website, Swift expressed, “All of the music I’ve ever made… now belongs… to me. And all my music videos. All the concert films. The album art and photography. The unreleased songs. The memories. The magic. The madness. Every single era. My entire life’s work.” Swift made clear the gravity of the moment by continuing, “To say this is my greatest dream come true is actually being pretty reserved about it.”

Throughout the last two years, many Swifties have been anticipating the re-release of the album Reputation. Swift touched on the subject in her letter by explaining that she has not “even re-recorded a quarter of it.” She elaborated by saying, “the Reputation album was so specific to that time in my life, and I kept hitting a stopping point when I tried to remake it. All that defiance, that longing to be understood while feeling purposely misunderstood, that desperate hope, that shame-born snarl and mischief. To be perfectly honest,” Swift said, “it’s the one album in those first six that I thought couldn’t be improved upon by redoing it. Not the music, or photos, or videos. So I kept putting it off. There will be a time (if you’re into the idea) for the unreleased Vault tracks from that album to hatch.”

Swift also added that she has finished re-recording her debut album and included, “I really love how it sounds now.” To wrap up her feelings of elation and amazement, she concluded the letter by stating, “Thanks to you and your goodwill, teamwork, and encouragement, the best things that have ever been mine… finally actually are.”

To celebrate regaining her musical master rights, Swift has released copies of all the vinyl albums for purchase.

Swift recently concluded her Eras world tour, which grossed more than any other tour on record.
